When I was young, my first real experience with the internet was at my primary school. In Year Two at the time, I watched my teacher access his e-mail and read websites on a 28.8kbit/s modem connection using Netscape Navigator while the rest of the students were entertained by a TV and VHS program. The blinking status bar was mesmerizing.
It was around this time, my Dad elected to register for a seminar for the internet, held at the Whitlam Library in Cabramatta, where we were told about search engines like Altavista and protocols such as GOPHER. We were even given advice about modems – the price for a 33.6kbit/s modem was not justified at the time and most users would be better served by a 28.8kbit/s modem.
It was a completely different era back then. But there was one name I kept hearing over and over. OzEmail. I had transferred between schools a few times, but one thing was constant. Their internet service provider (ISP) was always OzEmail and the school websites were always hosted at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~d…. where they used numbers for different schools. It seemed to me that OzEmail was the ISP to be with, at least, in Australia while its name really underscored just how important e-mail was (and perhaps still is) as an internet application.
While digging through my collection of optical media the other day, I came across this OzEmail Starter Kit which we had never used. It was just a year or so after the Y2K “check your system” floppies were all given away at local electronics shops, the dot-com boom meant that the next “freebie” was internet starter kits. While AOL literally “carpet bombed” the market with free trial offers posted to your house, bundled with magazines and newspapers, other ISPs often had similar offers in-store lined in up rows. Take one, or take them all – the stores didn’t care much, as they were probably going to get something out of it either way.
Seeing as I’ve recently posted about reliving the dial-up experience, I suppose this is a fitting follow-up with a distinctly Australian flavour.
The Starter Kit
OzEmail was founded in 1992 and operated independently, growing through acquisitions until 1999 when WorldCom/MCI took over ownership. Later in 2005, OzEmail would be purchased by iiNet and the name would be finally retired. The company was famous for making Malcolm Turnbull a lot of money – it’s a shame given this background, he was also the person responsible for the mess of an NBN we have today.

This particular starter kit comes from the era when WorldCom/MCI were the owners of OzEmail, when OzEmail were facing competition from many other ISPs and were less popular than in the early 1990s. I would date this starter kit from about late 2000 or early 2001, based on the fact it was shipped on a CD-ROM (as drives were less common in the mid-90s). The disc itself was packed inside the colour cardboard sleeve, which itself was packaged in a resealable cellophane bag – the hope was that these discs would be “shared” amongst families and friends in a referral marketing kind of way.
The cover shows a stereotypical “surfer”, figuratively surfing the internet. The OzEmail logo is flanked by their slogan, “Australia’s Favourite Internet” (which incidentally reminds me of Fujitsu’s air-conditioning slogan). This particular disc claims to give new customers a bonus 200 hours of internet access in their first month based on a registration code, an offer which expired on 30th June 2001.

The rear of the sleeve gives you a list of “inclusions” – some of the more interesting ones include “comprehensive internet training” and “5Mb of space to create your own web site”. In fact, the amount of data from this posting alone would not fit in the 5MB on offer – but modems at the time would need about 30 minutes to download 5MB. This starter kit requires a 14.4kbit/s or faster modem, 60MB of free hard drive space, Windows 95/98 486DX/66 with 16MB RAM or Windows NT 4.0 SP3 on Pentium with 16MB RAM or Mac OS 7.5.3 with 12MB RAM.

Inside the cardboard sleeve, there is a folded double-sided insert which contains a unique registration code. I suppose this is used to give you the free offer, but also track how successful these campaigns are (e.g. who registers, how many registrations per disc) and perhaps reduce abuse of the free 200 hour offer.

The disc itself continues the theme with a silkscreened colour top print. The disc clearly has “not for resale” printed on the top and was apparently produced by Eden Media – a local company which seems to be still around.

Looking at the pressing codes in the middle, this disc was coded as “OZEHARRY”.
When imaged as an ISO, the CD-ROM image containing both a ISO9660/Joliet partition and an Apple HFS partition has the following statistics:

When the CD is accessed using a Windows PC, the tree of directories is as follows:

The .ISP files which configure the modem for dialling into their signup server appear to have been logging into their server at 1300 369 585 using a username of ieone800 and password of iygtp1bs, accessing an internal server at 192.168.100.1 using insecure HTTP. There seems to be a login script that sends the username and password to their server’s login prior to attempting a PPP connection (something that was rarely needed in the later days of dial-up where PPP authentication could be initiated without a login script).
The Interactive Experience
It’s no surprise that as the interactive menus are authored in Macromedia Director as a Win32 application, it can still run on a modern Windows 10 computer, occupying the centre 800 x 600 of the screen. The best way to present this uniquely Aussie experience is just to make a video of it. The only issue I could tell was the occasional audio desynchronisation and re-start, which I’ve had to edit out of the capture, along with the Sony Music promotion where I’ve had to mute the audio to avoid any copyright strikes.
So many things have changed – the mention of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express make me squirm with discomfort, while Anzwers is no longer around and the whole notion of not being able to remain connected to the internet 24/7 is no longer the case. Definitely a cool time-capsule to have relived – it also shows that a well-kept pressed CD manages to make 20 years, no sweat.
Connection Troubleshooter Help File
Also included on the disk was a small OZHELP95.HLP Windows Help file. These files are no longer supported on Windows 10, so I fired up an old Windows 2000 VM to take a look at it.

It turns out, the help file is the OzEmail Internet Troubleshooter which is sort of like those “troubleshooting wizards” which try to help you troubleshoot issues by systematically asking you questions in a “tree” to try and solve issues without the need for a live human.

Conclusion
While OzEmail was Australia’s Favourite Internet in the early days of the internet, the name slowly faded into obscurity in the highly competitive market of the early 2000’s and eventually, the name was retired by iiNet in 2005. Such “starter kits” with introductory offers were commonplace in the early 2000’s, this one offering a uniquely Australian experience which was an interesting experience to relive and document almost 20 years later.
